The Art of Speaking Your Truth in Relationships
I want to talk about something that so many of us do, and we're not even aware of it.
Many of us are so adept at noticing and caring for the needs of others that we don't realize we're compromising before we even open our mouths to speak.
When it comes to discussions with our partners, family, bosses, or anyone else, we tend to think about what we want and what the other person wants. We envision a happy middle ground that will hopefully satisfy both parties. We present this compromise to our partner, hoping they'll see that we're meeting them halfway.
However, an unfortunate pattern often emerges. Your partner believes that you’re presenting them with your true desires, so they express what they genuinely want. The result? They think you're both compromising, but in reality, you have moved far away from what we originally wanted. Consequently, you end up feeling resentful, frustrated, and unfulfilled.
Have you ever found yourself in this situation, becoming upset because your partner doesn't understand why you're not happy with the solution? The solution that feels like a fair compromise to them, and a complete betrayal of what you wanted for you?
It's essential to be aware of when you're internally compromising. Take a moment to reflect on what you truly want and then speak it out loud. Your heart wants what it wants, and while you may not always get everything you desire, don't deprive yourself of the opportunity to voice it. Let your partner know what you genuinely want and how you genuinely feel.
This act of speaking your truth becomes your starting point. Once you've expressed your desires, it's time to listen to your partner. Ask them what they truly want and what their heart's desire or perfect scenario is.
Only then can you find a genuine middle ground—a compromise that honors each of your needs and feelings.
But, remember, honoring yourself enough to speak your truth is crucial. Don't compromise within yourself before you even utter a word.
