Sometimes it’s just the F*cking Shoes

I’ve been running for about 10 years.

That makes it sound a lot more impressive than it is.

What I mean is that 10 years ago, in a state of grief and desperation, I walked a lot and I was struggling to get out of my head. So I would pick a light pole or tree halfway down the block and run there, panting and struggling. Then I would walk a while and find another short distance to run. Over the years, with fits and starts, I kept running.

But from the get-go, I’ve had shin splints. They would get a little better sometimes and worse sometimes, but if I was running, they never really went away.

Fast forward to last December, when I was shopping with my sneakerhead son at Ross and he started losing his mind over these shoes he found. They were some fancy Nike running shoes that looked super weird. They were my size and I tried them on and they felt amazingly bouncy! So I got them for about $50 (he swears they’re $300 “game day” shoes).

Guess what? My shin splints were gone within a week.

Like, completely gone.

I was talking to a friend about this and telling her how I spent all those years icing my shins, stretching, and massaging my legs when it was just the f*cking shoes the whole time.

Which led me to wonder… what other parts of my life am I making overly complicated? Where else am I living with unnecessary pain? Where are there simple solutions available that I’m unwilling or unable to see? Who can I go to for help or advice?

Is there a part of your life that feels hopeless or impossible? Is it possible that a solution is available that you can’t see yet?
